According to MSNBC, a report by one airline industry company said that in 2005, the US airlines, on average, lost 10,000 bags each and every day! One way for increasing the chances that you and your checked luggage meet again is a good quality luggage tag. Paper and cheap plastic tags break loose much more easily. It's not worth the risk.
Also make sure that you have a copy of your itinerary (with hotel names and addresses) visible inside your bag. It's not enough to show your home address, unless you don't want to see your bag again until you get home!
